American Fingerstyle Guitarist

Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols transcriptions

Duck Baker’s reputation in the modern jazz guitar world depends largely on his performances of two great pianist/composers, Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk. It was his solo recording of Nichols tunes, Spinning Song, that first gained him real attention among jazz fans, and Duck Baker Plays Monk is seen by perceptive critics as a sort of companion piece. That arranging this complex music for solo guitar and improvising convincingly on the structures posed big challenges for Baker is understood, and it’s fair to say that writing out the arrangements is also a demanding undertaking for this self-taught musician. He has written out several of them over the years that are included among the modern jazz transcriptions in the online store, but these have mostly been the less involved compositions. Now he has added three more Monk tunes and two by Nichols, including some of the most complex of these arrangements.

The Monk tunes are “Bemsha Swing”, “Light Blue”, and “Round About Midnight”, while those by Nichols are “Portrait Of Ucha” and “2300 Skiddoo”.
