This 1980 title was Duck’s fifth and last solo record for Kicking Mule. These copies are still sealed, but no longer pristine, as some of the corners of the covers are slightly bent. New copies of this records are practically non-existent, but owing to less-than-perfect condition they are offered in the same sort of price range as new CD’s.

Duck Baker plays the music of Herbie Nichols

This classic fingerstyle jazz guitar record has been released as an audiophile LP by Triple Point Records to commemorate Nichols’ centennial birthday. This is the same label which released Duck Baker Plays Monk in late 2016. The original CD, which came out in 1996 (and is still available from this site), got rave reviews in the jazz press, and put Baker on the map in the jazz guitar world.

Acoustic Guitar magazine proclaimed Spinning Song “one of the best guitar records ever recorded – by anybody.”

Pareto Sketches LP

This Limited Edition LP contains 12 tracks from the 21 that comprise the 2-CD, complete version of Pareto Sketches. The audiophile, LP version is pressed on 180 gram vinyl and is offered on a limited basis while supplies last. This project involved new compositions by Duck Baker, as performed by himself and several Italian musicians. Michele Calgaro, Val Bonetti and Davide Mastrangelo were the main participants besides Baker, with mandolinist Massimo Gatti joining for duets on four numbers. Producer Luigi Maramotti shows his mettle as a guitarist on one of the duos with Gatti.

We are happy to announce the release of this duo concert by Duck Baker and clarinet master Ben Goldberg. It was recorded at a house concert in Berkeley, California in 2003, with the two musicians teaming up for a program devoted to Thelonious Monk tunes and arrangements (nine tunes are Monk originals, and two are standards that bear his unmistakable stamp).

Duck has recorded solo versions of all but three of these tunes on his own records (especially Duck Baker Plays Monk), but these duo versions are something else. The two musicians relate to the tunes and to each other in all kinds of imaginative ways, surprising themselves and their audience time after time.

Play Monk In Berkeley was recorded on a minidisc player, so while there’s no tape hiss and very little background noise, the slightly edgy quality that’s typical of this recording method is discernible, and a occasionally a bit of distortion. To give listeners a fair sense of this we have isolated a section from the opening track (Monk’s arrangement of “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing”) where these problems are noticeable. Most of the the record sounds better than this, but even with less than perfect sound, we think the music will appeal to fans of Ben Goldberg, Duck Baker, Thelonious Monk, and wide-open, modern jazz.
