We now have copies of Duck Baker’s new release on the Confront label, Contra Costa Dance. These recordings were made as demos when Duck was looking for a new label in the summer of 1982, and forgotten until they were unearthed in 2021. Three of the twelve originals on Contra Costa Dance were never recorded by Baker on later releases, and though the recording quality is not as good as later studio versions of the other tunes, Baker’s playing seems to have an even deeper feeling.
Contra Costa Dance is available on CD or as a digital download. There is also and digital book of transcriptions of the tunes (though not the improvisations). Because many of the tunes were published in other books over the years, several of the tunes are scanned from older books. Because it doesn’t look as tidy as other digital books I have put together, it costs a bit less.
