Hi, Duck -- Looking forward to the new release. I think I said this before, but thanks again for posting the Midnight on the Water tab. I'd been playing it for years and had pretty much copied your fingering as much as I could from YouTube. Something was always missing and now I know what it was. Now that I have your version more or less together, I'm adding my own. Love this piece. A tab for O'Carolan/Sullivan Tunes without titles #174 and #175 would also be appreciated...in your "spare time," of course. Thanks, Tad Isaacs, SF

Hi, Duck -- Longtime disciple here. You certainly won't remember, but I accosted you outside of the Freight years ago with a "hello" message from someone in the Bay Area -- can't remember who. Might have been Marc Silber but I don't think I knew him yet. Anyhow, thanks for including the "Midnight on the Water" sheet music. I requested it from you a while ago and, lo!, here it is. I managed to steal most of it from your YouTube recording, but my middle section is still pretty sloppy. Another request for the future. Hi Duck - I found some of your arrangements while going through some stuff the other day and I've resolved to get playing again. I stopped when my first daughter arrived and its been 14 years; truth be told I was sick of the sound of my own playing and guys with beards and acoustic guitars were everywhere I turned. You were (doubtless are) a great teacher - hopefully I'll have retained some of that attention to detail attitude I remember you being so hot on. Sitting here with 'My Heart Belongs to Jenny' on a loop (I adore that tune) - I'm going to tackle that I think (if I can find a book with your tab in it I'll buy that), as well to going back to Deep River and Battle Cry for Freedom Hope you're holding up amongst all this madness. Goodness, what an amazing night that was, honestly one of the most memorable gigs I ever played! And not just the gig itself but the mad bash afterwards and the whole visit at the Hotel, through to Charlie cooking us a big breakfast the next day and playing tunes on his fiddle while we ate. By "we" I mean John Renbourn and myself. I do even remember the exchange involving our nicknames, now that you have reminded me. This was the last gig John and I ever played together in Scotland, and we barely survived that tour - I think we must have been determined to sample every malt made in the Highlands! And it would have been right around 1990, maybe a year on either side of that. Thanks for the memory!

Just dug out an album 'Kid on the Mountain' which you signed sometime way back (80's/90's?) at a concert in Glenfinnan House Hotel. I remember it was a great night but can't remember who you shared the double bill with? You signed the album- all the best 'Tchumbley' - my nickname- and you commented ' what sort of a name is that?' to which I replied 'What sort of a name is Duck?' Good times. All the best through these hard times.

Thanks for the kind words, Robert. I did start with steel strings but I liked the hard attack that flamenco guitarists use with their guitars so I switched to a flamenco before I made my first record. I still use steel strings for some things, but not so much for ragtime.

“ when you wore a tulip “. As a young guitarist I bought this record when it was released in Europe. I first thought there were more guitarist playing at the same time. Until I found out it was only one guy : Doug Baker. As a guitarist I started learning the tab notes that came with the record. I am still not able to play any of the songs on the album the way the Duck does. His guitar playing is just mind-boggling and jawdropping. I have sold all my vinyl records except one “when you were a tulip”.....

Would love to see Mr Baker live. He plays beautifully and I especially like his ragtime jazz style with the nylon string. I recently found Duck Baker via YouTube and I can’t get enough. Just wondering why he chose nylon string, it seems harder with the thumb hooking to make an F. But it sure sounds nice. I’ll be buying some instructional books for sure and really appreciate Duck Bakers music. I hope to see him live in the future or who knows, maybe a guitar camp. Thank you!
