1930 was a busy year in terms of recording for Jelly Roll Morton. He was in the studios on six separate occasions as a leader and twice more as a sideman. “If Someone Would Only Love Me” is from the first of these sessions and he only recorded it once. This is not surprising since his recording career came to a near-complete halt from 1931 until 1938, and most of the later recordings involved revisiting earlier material. Few would argue in any case that this pop song is among Morton’s most memorable works, but it is an excellent and very memorable tune for all that. Duck Baker worked up his arrangement early in his own career, and there is a short studio recording from the 1970s that has yet to be issued.
