Duck Baker Discography
This discography is not intended to be complete, except as regards recordings that have actually been released commercially, but it has proven difficult to draw a very clear line even here, in two kinds of cases. One regards the sort of sampler recordings drawn from live events like festivals, concert series, etc. on which one or a few Duck Baker performances have been included. Most of these have been included but one or two that had minimal distribution and are long unavailable have not. The other kind of case involves recordings made to accompany books. In such cases it is common practice to use both previously existing commercial recordings and newly recorded performances, and in the latter case the recordings may vary from simple run-throughs intended only to benefit students to renditions that are worthy of inclusion on records aimed at the listening audience. The approach used here was to include such performances only when they actually have been used on other releases. This added to confusion about recording dates, since such pieces were often recorded to accompany books that came out in the 1990’s and were then added to stand-alone recordings 15 or 20 years after the fact. The rationale for reusing the material is simple: not everyone who wants to hear the music wants to buy a collection of guitar arrangements.
It’s certainly striking how little emphasis is placed on recording dates in the folk/acoustic world, compared to the jazz world, and because of that it would require major detective work to ever pinpoint a lot of the dates for the early recordings here. It was actually a surprise to see, for instance, that Peter Finger made the habit of including recording dates on his Acoustic Music sessions, which is why the dates for the 3 CD’s that were recorded for his label are given, in contrast to the recordings made for labels like Kicking Mule, Shanachie and Rounder. It’s worth noting that Baker himself did not generally include dates for recordings on his own labels.
The result is that many of the dates given are very approximate, often just guesses based on release dates. This is true of many of the 1970’s records and remains true throughout, for the most part. In some cases, somewhat better information will be forthcoming that will allow for adjustments, but as this will be a process that continues at its own pace over time, the discography as is is being made public, and will be corrected over time when possible.
Since the aim is only to list issued recordings, almost no alternate tracks have been indicated, and for the most part the sequencing of the titles has more to do with the running orders of the releases than with the order in which the recordings were actually made.
